In Ngorongoro Conservation Area, there are two other volcano craters apart from the main crater where visitors go for game viewing. The two small craters are Empakai and Olmoti. The Ngorongoro Highlands where these two craters are located offers expanse of verdant grasses with great areas for walking safaris and hiking.

Empakai Crater
It is arguably the most beautiful place within the Ngorongoro Crater area. It’s a 1.5-hour drive from the Ngorongoro entry gate. You can see the active volcanic mountain, Oldonyo Lengai, from its rim. Looking down into the crater, it appears pink from the vast number of flamingos (seasonal) drinking from the lake on the crater floor. Along the walls of the crater are a variety of colourful flowers. Hiking to the crater’s floor takes 45 minutes, while the hike back up takes about an hour. Hiking back can be demanding, so a certain level of fitness is required. Armed guards always accompany hikers.

Olmoti Crater
Olmoti doesn’t have a lake like Empakai, but it offers lush green surroundings with breathtaking views of the Ngorongoro highlands. The hike towards the Olmoti crater takes you through highland forests, providing a stunning scenic experience. The highlight of the hike is reaching the crater peak and enjoying panoramic views of the area. Hiking to the top takes 45 minutes, while the hike back up takes about 30 minutes. This is a quiet and less-trodden path, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a more peaceful adventure in nature.
