NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

At 54,000 square mile (bigger than Rwanda and Burundi combined) Nyerere National Park is the biggest game reserve in the world bordering Mikumi National Park to the northwest and the Udzungwa Mountains to the west. Even though the reserve is gigantic, only minor areas are open for safaris, which are the approximately 2,500 square miles commonly called the “photographic” region with great picture-taking opportunities.

The national park supports the largest population of buffalos, elephants, hippos and crocodiles as well as some of the last remaining Black Rhino in Africa. It is one of the few places in Africa that has a healthy population of wild dogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, warthog, wildebeest, giraffe, hartebeest, sable antelope, greater kudu, eland and Selous zebras. It has more than 350 species of birds including the goliath heron, fish eagle and kingfishers to excite any keen ornithologist.
