Tarangire National Park

Spanning 1,081 square miles (2,800 square kilometers), Tarangire National Park is home to northern Tanzania’s largest elephant population, with three main herds, each consisting of approximately 1,000 individuals. The park is renowned for its iconic baobab trees, which dot the landscape, creating a typical African wilderness.
A wildlife-rich sfari destination
Beyond its impressive elephant population, Tarangire is teeming with diverse wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, zebras, Grant’s gazelles, and the rare fringe-eared oryx.
The park is also home to at least five species of antelope, while carnivores such as hyenas, jackals, and wild dogs roam the area, especially during seasonal migrations.
The lifeline of Tarangire
The Tarangire River, which flows through the park year-round, serves as a vital water source, attracting large concentrations of animals, particularly in the dry season when wildlife congregates along its banks.
A birdwatcher’s paradise
With over 550 recorded bird species, Tarangire is a haven for bird enthusiasts. The park hosts a mix of permanent and migratory species, including the Maasai ostrich, the largest bird in the world.
Whether on a game drive or a walking safari, visitors can marvel at the incredible birdlife alongside the park’s iconic mammal species.
For those seeking a less crowded but wildlife-rich safari experience, Tarangire National Park offers an unforgettable glimpse into Tanzania’s untamed beauty.
