Kilimanjaro Shira Plateau & Walk
Kilimanjaro Shira Plateau & Walk
The Shira plateau area of Kilimanjaro is a fantastically beautiful and often overlooked area of the mountain range. As so few people are aware of it, it offers untouched wilderness with diverse flora and fauna, perfect for day hikes. The more sporty can traverse the ancient rim, alternatively a more relaxing hike can be done on the plateau floor perhaps as far as the ‘cone place’, or Shira needles at the southern end. In the west, the Kibo Maasif of Kilimanjaro stretches out and up to the glaciers of the summit, featuring eroded lava flows and a number of streams.
The plateau features a wide variety of wildlife, although most is nocturnal and elusive. Our experienced guides however will be able to point to the marks, footprints and other clues they left behind though. bushbucks live on the plateau and occasionally the remains of elands and elephants can be found; proof they (and the predator animals hunting them) visit the area as well.
From the parking area, you can choose where to go on the plateau, in your own pace and at your heart’s desire. Our experienced guides will help you traverse the wilderness using the animal tracks and will carry some trail food and a picnic lunch. We advise though to carry a small backpack with some water, personal items and some warm and waterproof clothing as the weather on the plateau can change drastically and quickly. Finally, of course a pair of good walking shoes is recommended.
