Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka Hot Springs or Maji Moto, translates to “hot water” in Swahili. This beautiful spot features warm, clear springs that emerge from the ground, making it an ideal place to relax after a long flight, an exciting safari, or a hike on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Located in the Hai district of the Kilimanjaro Region, about an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Kikuletwa is a hidden gem. The drive to the springs offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. After departing from the paved road, you’ll traverse an off-road path through picturesque African scenery, including bushland, dry riverbeds, and majestic baobab and acacia trees. Along the way, you’ll pass by various tribes, providing a glimpse into Tanzania’s rich cultural heritage.
Upon arrival, you’ll discover a lush oasis with turquoise waters where you can walk around, swim in the warm water, interact with locals, and relax in the shade of palm and fig trees.
Kikuletwa Hot Springs is also home to Garra Rufa fish, commonly known as “doctor fish.” These small fish are famous for gently nibbling away dead skin, offering a unique and natural foot treatment. Many visitors find the light tickling sensation on their feet enjoyable! You may also spot turtles and catfish swimming in the clear water, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere of this remarkable location.
