Martyrs’ Shrine Namugongo

The Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine Namugongo stands as a powerful symbol of faith and sacrifice. This sacred site in Namugongo, Uganda, memorializes 22 Catholic and Anglican believers who were martyred between 1885 and 1887 for their unwavering commitment to their faith. These martyrs were executed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then-king of Buganda, who perceived the growing influence of Christianity as a threat to his authority and traditional beliefs. 

The Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine Namugongo has become a place of pilgrimage for Christians worldwide, drawing thousands every year on June 3rd to honor the memory and sacrifices of these martyrs. The shrine is adorned with basilicas, chapels, and monuments dedicated to preserving the legacy of the martyrs.
