Materuni Day Trip
Materuni Day Trip
Materuni Waterfalls is a stunning natural attraction and holds the title of the tallest waterfall in Kilimanjaro region. It features crystal-clear glacier water cascading 70 meters into its basin. Located at an altitude of 2500 meters, the hike to the waterfall provides breathtaking views of Kibo and Moshi town on clear days. Along the way, you will pass through valleys and hills adorned with tropical rainforests, ancient coffee plantations, banana and avocado farms.
The hike to the base of the waterfall takes about an hour one way, and some parts are pretty challenging, so it’s important to wear suitable hiking boots. If you are an older hiker, bringing a walking pole is highly recommended. After the hike, you will return to the village for an informative coffee plantation tour. During the tour, you will explore a coffee estate and learn about Tanzanian coffee and the cultivation process. You will have the opportunity to transform coffee beans into coffee powder by roasting the dry raw coffee beans over outdoor fires, manually pounding the beans in wooden vessels, and filtering the husks to the rhythm of African chants sung by Materuni women and men. You will also get to make a couple of cups of coffee for yourself.
Before leaving Materuni, you will enjoy a delicious local lunch featuring a variety of Tanzanian dishes that will leave you wanting more.
P.S. This day trip is possible if your flight arrives early, between 7 am and 12 noon.
