Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) rescues and rehabilitates elephants from all over Kenya. It is located on the edge of Nairobi National Park and provides a sanctuary for orphaned baby elephants that are victims of the ivory poaching trade. Every day from 11 am to 12 pm, visitors can watch the baby elephants come out of the acacia forest to a muddy watering hole where their keepers feed them. The elephants then play and wallow in the mud; if you are lucky, you might get a chance to touch them. After their playtime, the calves return to the woodlands while the keepers provide information about the orphanage’s work and the importance of elephant conservation.
If you are interested in supporting the orphanage, you can also consider adopting an elephant. In the evenings, between 5 and 6 pm, visitors can return to observe the calves as they return to their stalls. This provides an opportunity to gain deeper insights into conservation efforts and see the elephants’ cosy stables.
Please note that there is a limit on the number of visitors per day, so it’s important to book your visit in advance.
