Shira Plateau Day Hike
Shira Plateau Day Hike
The Mount Kilimanjaro Shira Plateau is located at an altitude of around 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) and is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, featuring volcanic rock formations and expansive views of the surrounding wilderness. It stands as one of the oldest volcanic peaks of Kilimanjaro and boasts a diverse range of flora and fauna due to its proximity to Amboseli National Park in Kenya. The plateau is characterized by rugged terrain and provides occasional glimpses of wildlife, although sightings are infrequent due to the altitude and environment.
Itinerary:
Your day will commence from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, and you will embark on a 4-hour drive through various Mountainous zones to the trailhead. Once at the trailhead, you can choose your route on the plateau at your own pace. Our experienced guides will assist you in navigating the wilderness using animal tracks. You will enjoy a picnic lunch amidst breathtaking views, including potential sightings of Kibo Peak and its glaciers, weather permitting.
In conclusion, the Shira Plateau walk provides an excellent opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to experience the magnificent beauty of Africa’s highest peak without committing to a full ascent. It offers a blend of moderate physical activity and stunning natural scenery, making it suitable for both experienced hikers and those seeking a memorable day in nature.
Note: We recommend carrying a small backpack with water, personal items, and warm, waterproof clothing, as the weather on the plateau can change rapidly. Additionally, a pair of sturdy walking shoes is essential.
