Tanzania
OVERVIEW
Tanzania has received several awards as the top tourist destination in Africa and one of the best in the world. It offers thrilling wildlife, spectacular landscapes, and unique cultural experiences. More than 35% of Tanzania’s land is a conservation area that offers everything that the beauty of nature can provide, including numerous wildlife species and uncountable plants.
Tanzania has numerous tourist destinations, each with unique charm and characteristics. The northern part of the country is dominated by the most well-known attractions, including:
- Magnificent Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in Africa that offers everyday hiking opportunities for climbers.
- Serengeti National Park is the ultimate attraction in Africa. It allows visitors to participate in what has been called the most incredible show on earth, The Great Wildebeest Migration, and see the “Big Five” and other spectacular wildlife.
- Ngorongoro Crater was created after the large volcano exploded and collapsed 3 million years ago. This dramatic caldera is now home to over 25,000 resident animals, including the “Big Five”.
- Tarangire National Park is a remarkable park dotted with baobab trees, famous for its elephant population—the largest in Tanzania! Tarangire is also a haven for birdwatchers.
Tanzania’s southern and western circuits offer a different but equally captivating experience. The Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park, for instance, are havens for wildlife enthusiasts, home to endangered species such as wild dogs. The western side, on the other hand, is a paradise for primate safaris, offering unique experiences like chimpanzee trekking at Gombe and Mahale.
Zanzibar, with its pristine beaches and turquoise waters, is the perfect place to unwind after a safari adventure. But it’s not just a beach destination. The island is steeped in history and culture, with influences from the Swahili and Islamic traditions evident in the UNESCO heritage site Stone Town. Visitors can explore a spice plantation, take a cooking class, or go for a bike ride, offering a diverse and enriching experience.
For first-time visitors, visiting the Northern Circuit is highly recommended. You can do and see a lot within a short period of time, unlike the attractions in the south or elsewhere, which are scattered and often involve long driving hours.
