Mkomazi National Park

Nestled in northeastern Tanzania, Mkomazi National Park is a breathtaking wilderness area situated between the Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions.
Sharing its northern border with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, Mkomazi serves as a crucial migratory corridor, allowing elephants, zebras, and oryx to move freely between the two reserves based on seasonal rainfall patterns.
A wildlife & birding paradise
Spanning 1,240 square miles (3,200 square kilometers), Mkomazi is home to a remarkable array of wildlife, including hartebeests, giraffes, gerenuks, lesser kudus, elands, impalas, and Grant’s gazelles.
The park also shelters buffaloes and formidable predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
For birdwatchers, Mkomazi is a true haven, boasting over 400 recorded bird species, including several dry-country specials that thrive in its arid environment.
Stunning landscapes & breathtaking views
The park’s scenic beauty is unparalleled, set against the majestic backdrops of the Usambara and Pare Mountains with sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mkomazi’s distinct dry-country terrain is characterized by grey-green Nyika bush, ancient baobab trees, isolated rocky hills, open savanna woodlands dotted with umbrella acacias, and rolling grassland valleys—creating a mesmerizing and diverse landscape for visitors to explore.
A perfect addition to your safari itinerary
Mkomazi fits seamlessly into a northern Tanzania safari circuit, whether as part of an itinerary covering Arusha, Usambara, Tanga, Pangani, Saadani, and Dar es Salaam, or as a standalone destination.
It’s also an excellent option for winding down after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a chance to relax and take in Tanzania’s diverse scenery.
