Tarangire National Park
The Tarangire National Park, covering a total area of 2,800 sq. km, is a well-known sanctuary for the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania. The park is characterized by its remarkable baobab trees and is home to three main elephant populations, each consisting of approximately 1,000 individuals.
In addition to elephants, the park boasts a diverse array of wildlife, including leopard, cheetah, lion, giraffe, hippopotamus, wildebeest, zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Fringe-eared Oryx, and at least five species of antelope. Carnivorous animals such as hyena, jackal, and wild dogs are also found within the park, particularly during the seasonal months.
The Tarangire River, which permeates through the park, is a major source of attraction for wildlife. The park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, being the permanent or migratory habitat of over 550 species, including the world’s largest bird, the Maasai Ostrich.

WHEN TO VISIT
Tarangire National Park is especially interesting for game drives during the dry season – late June to October. At this time of the year, huge numbers of thirsty animals congregate along the banks of the Tarangire River. However, the park remains an excellent spot for visiting throughout the year, guaranteeing opportunities to witness elephants and a variety of other wildlife species.
