Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on Earth, straddling the Zambezi River on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. This breathtaking waterfall spans approximately 5,577 feet wide and drops over 354 feet—that’s about 1,700 meters wide and 108 meters tall—creating an awe-inspiring curtain of water that defines raw natural power.
Long before it gained international fame, the falls were revered by local communities. The Kololo tribe, who lived in the area during the 1800s, called it Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The smoke that thunders,” a name inspired by the thunderous roar and mist that rises high above the gorge. In 1855, Scottish explorer David Livingstone became the first European to see the falls and named them Victoria Falls in honor of Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
Geologically, the falls are the result of tectonic uplift and faulting, which created deep cracks in the Earth’s crust. Over millions of years, the Zambezi River carved through the plateau, forming a series of gorges and shaping the horseshoe-shaped waterfall we see today. This continuous erosion process is still at work, gradually shifting the waterfall upstream.
A guided walking tour of the falls takes around two hours along a well-marked trail, offering panoramic viewpoints and up-close encounters with the roaring cascade. To truly experience all that Victoria Falls has to offer—whether it’s sunset river cruises, scenic helicopter flights, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, or cultural tours—you’ll want to stay for at least 2 to 3 nights.
From high-adrenaline adventure to quiet moments of wonder, Victoria Falls delivers an unforgettable journey into one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.
