Volcanoes National Park

In the northwestern highlands of Rwanda, the town of Musanze serves as the gateway to one of Africa’s most iconic natural treasures—Volcanoes National Park. This extraordinary protected area is a tapestry of montane ecosystems, ranging from bamboo and evergreen forests to grassy meadows, swamps, and heathlands.
The park is world-renowned for offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience: gorilla trekking. Here, visitors have the rare opportunity to come face to face with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat—a profoundly moving and unforgettable encounter.
But the magic of Volcanoes National Park doesn’t end with gorillas. The forests are also home to golden monkeys, spotted hyenas, buffaloes, bushbucks, black-fronted duikers, and even majestic elephants, creating a rich and dynamic ecosystem teeming with life.
To fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and wildlife wonders of Volcanoes National Park, it’s recommended to stay at least two nights near the park. This allows time not just for trekking, but also to appreciate the region’s breathtaking scenery and deep biodiversity—a true highlight of any journey through Rwanda.
