Ready for the wild? What to pack for your African safari
Preparing for a safari in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, or Rwanda is part of the adventure itself. Packing smart, not just light, will make your journey more comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.
The goal is simple: bring everything you need, avoid what you don’t, and leave room for souvenirs and gifts you’ll want to take home. Below is a practical, traveler-tested list to help you plan with confidence.
General recommendations
First thing we highly recommend to you is packing as light as possible and always leaving space for souvenirs and gifts.
You should make sure you have all essential documents with you at all times, including passports (plus a few photocopies), printed flight ticket, visa, emergency contact list, printed trip itinerary, travel insurance and money.
Also, remember these fundamental items:
- a small pouch or a neck-hanging travel bag;
- strong and comfortable, preferably waterproof shoes;
- cotton, breathable socks;
- sandals or flip-flops.
Baggage restrictions
A maximum of 33 lb (15 kg) of luggage per person is allowed on light aircraft flights within the country, excluding hand luggage and camera gear. Additional luggage may incur extra charges depending on the airline. International carriers have their own rules, so be sure to check their policies before traveling.
Always keep valuables such as electronics, money, documents and essential medication in your hand luggage.
For safety and compliance, lock your luggage. Tanzania, and the region in general, enforces strict regulations on transporting ivory, precious stones, tropical woods, foods and drinks. Only buy such items from certified vendors who can provide a receipt.
Narcotics and many prescription drugs are strictly prohibited in Tanzania unless you can present valid medical documentation.
Please also further check local regulations from the country where you live and also your airline.
Luggage
Bring a soft-sided waterproof bag of up to 44 lb (20 kg). You may also want a small waterproof backpack or a neck-hanging pouch for quick access to essentials during game drives and transfers.
Dressing and footwear
Choose practical and comfortable clothing suited for warm days, cool evenings, and dusty environments. Consider packing:
- casual, loose-fitting clothing such as short or long-sleeved shirts (camouflage clothes are recommended);
- iightweight, breathable pants;
- long-sleeved fleece or sweater for evenings and early mornings;
- nightwear of pajamas;
- a sun hat and scarf or buff for the dust;
- for Rwanda, strong, waterproof hiking boots for gorilla trekking);
- for Rwanda and Uganda, a lightweight rain poncho.
Cultural note: when visiting local villages, women should avoid short pants, sleeveless tops, or skirts that do not cover the knees. Dressing modestly shows respect for local customs and traditions.
